The Polyzoomorphic Elephant - 8" x 4-1/2" [MNM#04-01015] A gift to the museum from Dr. Dan Erlanson, who writes: "I got this for you in Udaipur, a lakeside city in the northwest of India. It's done in the Mughal tradition of miniature painting in whch the finer lines are made with brushes containing a single hair. The pigments are mostly derived from semiprecious stones except for the yellow, which is supposedly made from the dried urine of mango-fed cattle." Detail of painting (area shown approx. 1.6" x 1.8") |
